Season Finale: MTT and Gil Shaham Presented by New World Symphony

Gustav Mahler’s symphonies have changed the way we think of music. And Michael Tilson Thomas is changing the way we hear them. Six of MTT’s 12 Grammy Awards celebrate his explosively fresh interpretations of these symphonic masterpieces. Encounter extraordinary expression by MTT’s side as he explores Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, a rich panorama of life showcasing tender bereavement and beautiful jubilation. Gil Shaham relishes in the vigor and beauty in fellow virtuoso violinist Joseph Boulogne’s Ninth Concerto. Relish in the last glimpse of this season’s Fellows in this formidable finale.

Chamber Music: Schubert Octet Presented by New World Symphony

The final chamber music concert of the season has the New World Symphony Fellows’ talent and exuberance on full display. Franz Schubert’s Octet is inspired by Beethoven, and full of artistry and character that play out like a symphony. The fanfare begins with George Walker’s Music for Brass that blends revered chorales with lively dances. Grammy Award-winner and University of Miami professor Lansing McLoskey describes his “Three Bs” of music not as Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, but Beatles, Bauhaus and Black Flag.

Sounds of the Times: Songs of Hope Presented by New World Symphony

German conductor Matthias Pintscher returns to Miami Beach to present works by his native land’s composers. Operatic master Bernd Alois Zimmermann lets the cello sing in his Song of Hope, performed by NWS’s own Cello Fellow Ben Fryxell, a winner of NWS’s Concerto Competition. In Schreiben, Helmut Lachenmann operates the orchestra as a writer that sometimes whispers and at other times screams. This concert includes the world premiere of a new work—Orun—by Brazilian innovator Marcos Balter, whose works are rooted in hyper-dramatization of live performance.
